About AusGeek
AusGeek is a site about computers and the people who cannot leave them alone. Gear, homelabs, self-hosting, Linux, retro machines, the occasional sci-fi tangent — if it lives in that Venn diagram of IT, tech and nerd, it belongs here.
The idea
Most tech writing is either a spec sheet with adjectives, or a press release with a byline. Neither helps much when you are standing in front of a machine at 11pm wondering why the array will not rebuild.
So the rule here is simple: write it the way you would explain it to a mate. Plain words. Real numbers. Say when something is a faff, say when it is not worth it, and say when the boring option is the right one. If I have not actually done the thing, I will tell you that too.
What you will find
- Gear: Hardware, reviews and what I would actually buy.
- How-To: Tutorials, fixes, scripts and the occasional rescue job.
- Homelab: NAS, Proxmox, Docker, Home Assistant, networking, self-hosting.
- Nerd Culture: Sci-fi, retro computing, games, collecting and geek history.
- Signal: News worth your attention, and the odd rant.
Where it is written from
Australia, which you will occasionally notice in the spelling and the odd aside about local pricing or availability. The advice itself is meant to work wherever you are — prices and shops are quoted in the terms most readers will recognise, with local caveats called out when they matter.
How it pays for itself
Some product links are affiliate links, which means AusGeek may earn a small commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. That never decides what gets covered or what gets recommended. The disclosure page spells out exactly how that works.
Bylines
Articles run under the AusGeek name for now rather than an individual byline. That will change; when it does, it will be obvious.
